25th Anniversary Celebration: Japanese Orchestral Music

The sound of an ancient gagaku instrument, the sho, played by world renowned Mayumi Miyata, resonated throughout Carnegie Hall setting the tone for an orchestral concert celebrating Music From Japan’s 25th Anniversary and the 40th Anniversary of the New York/Tokyo Sister City relationship on November 9. The Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra under Paul Lustig Dunkel joined her in the American premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s Utsurohi-Nagi for sho and string orchestra. The program, a collaboration between Japanese and American artists, also featured works by Shin-ichiro Ikebe, Tokuhide Niimi, Takashi Yoshimatsu, and Karen Tanaka.
