For its 22nd Season, Music From Japan presented “A Tribute to Toru Takemitsu” on Saturday February 8th and 9th at Merkin Concert Hall. “A Tribute to Toru Takemitsu” featured two days of music by and in honor of Mr. Takemitsu, as well as a lecture and a symposium. Besides the eleven pieces by Takemitsu presented over two days, two composers—Joji Yuasa and Lukas Foss—were commissioned by Music From Japan to write music to honor the late composer. On February 8th, Akimichi Takeda gave a lecture on “the Music and Life of Toru Takemitsu.” On the 9th, Lukas Foss, Akimichi Takeda, and Joji Yuasa discussed the composer’s work on a panel moderated by John Rockwell. The New York Times reviewed the event favorably, explaining that the evening revealed a side of Takemitsu that went beyond the limits of conventional wisdom about the composer.
