MFJ presented a concert on March 1st 1976 that included only pieces composed in the 1960s in an effort to highlight a decade that Mr. Miura regarded as a turning point for Japanese contemporary music. The featured composers were Hifumi Shimoyama, Minoru Miki, Akira Miyoshi, Shin-Ichi Matsushita, Kazuo Fukushima, and Teizo Matsumura.
Music From Japan commemorated the bicentennial year of the USA with a concert that took place on December 19th, 1976. In this concert, which took place at Alice Tully Hall, MFJ continued its commitment to new works written by Japanese composers, presenting pieces by Yoshiro Irino, Shin-Ichiro Ikebe, Motohiko Adachi, Shuko Mizuno, and Yuji Takahashi. Of the five pieces presented, one was a New York premiere, three were US premieres, and one, “For You I Sing This Song” by Yuji Takahashi, was a world premiere. Twenty-seven musicians and three world class ensembles lent their talents to the performance including the Kronos Quartet, Tashi, and members of the Gregg Smith Singers.
